David Leichner – Authority Magazine (Sep. 1, 2025) – As part of our series about “The Future Of Aviation”, I had the pleasure of interviewing John Owen.
John Owen brings more than 25 years of experience in management and financial consulting to the leadership team. His early background includes roles at State Street, Accenture, and KPMG. He was previously CFO for a supply-chain management company. John joined Airshare as CFO in 2016 and became CEO in March 2018. John received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Kansas and a master’s degree in accounting from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Thank you so much for joining us in this interview series! Before we dive in, our readers would love to get to know you a bit better. What brought you to a career in private aviation?
I’ve always been drawn to understanding how businesses operate and grow. I started my career in finance, earning my CPA and working in accounting and consulting firms, investment banking and logistics. Along the way, I realized my true interest was in building strong teams and scalable operations that support long-term growth.
That’s what led me to Airshare. With a transportation background, the transition to aviation from a financial and operational standpoint was pretty seamless. Both also have a heavy focus on safety and the terminology is very similar. I joined as CFO and quickly saw how unique the company was — its people, its culture, and its growth potential. When I was promoted to CEO shortly after joining the company, it was obvious Airshare had significant potential and I wanted to help lead the next chapter of the company. Since then, we’ve evolved from a small regional operator into one of the largest brands in private aviation, offering a comprehensive suite of services for customers of all shapes and sizes. Airshare has been on an expansion track.
Over the past 24 months, it acquired the aircraft management arm of Wheels Up.
It then went national with its jet card and fractional ownership programs.
Last year, Kompass Kapital Company became the majority owner.
